Just what is the point of the lights being on when nobody's home?

What's the problem?

Today fossil fuels supply over 90% of the world's energy. Carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels is the largest source of greenhouse gases from human activities and a massive 30 billion tonnes of CO2 is emitted each year. If we want to stop global warming and climate change, we need to work on using less energy as reducing energy use will reduce greenhouse gases. Simple really.

So What Are We Doing?

We have assessed our energy usage and calculated our carbon footprint. Whilst we are working on ways to reduce our emissions, such as installing light sensors in corridors, we are also offsetting unavoidable emissions by 'pledging' money to plant trees in the UK and the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. We will also be rolling out staff energy saving workshops - so make sure you sign up!.

And What Can You Do?

It really is easier than you think to implement a greener attitude. Even making small changes to everyday tasks will have a positive affect in minimising your energy use – good for your green conscience and your wallet too. Turning off lights when you leave a room, switching appliances off at the mains or turning the thermostat down by 1°C are all actions that you won't notice – until you get a lower fuel bill!.

Every year we need a forest the size of Wales to provide all the paper we use in Britain.

Popular Pledges:

  • 18 people have pledged to unplug thier phone charger, once it has charged. After a year, we will have saved enough energy to boil 1026 kettles!
  • 15 people pledged to use a mug instead of a plastic cup. In one year, we will have saved plastic, equivalent in weight to 195 bags of sugar going to landfill!
  • 11 have pledged to replace one light bulb with an energy saving bulb. After one year, we will have saved enough energy to light 330000 average homes!
